DIY Room Decor with Paper Art – Let Colors Speak for You

DIY Room Decor with Paper Art – Let Colors Speak for You

In this blog-post, you’ll learn how to decorate your room with an enamoring variety of paper artwork – which is both easy on the eyes, as well as other wallet.

In today’s world, all of us could use a little bit of sunshine in our lives, and most importantly, in our living rooms. And I don’t only mean this in the literal sense. A colorless & craft-less space makes for an overall dull quality of living and evokes no feeling of belonging.

Trust me…I should know.

On a personal note

As a sufferer of life-long anxiety and periodic episodes of depression, my bare-walled room of five years ago certainly added to my daily misery.

Waking up to the sight of white walls, white sheets, and white marble bathroom tiles made me feel horrible. As if I were the inmate of a mental asylum or a character in one of those old Hitchcock films.

Fortunately, my home-life took a turn for the better when one of my devoted friends once dropped in and practically forced me out of my slumber.

Taking me by the arm, she took me to an origami workshop running in my neighborhood. Before I knew it, I found myself enrolled in a home paper crafts class. There, the instructor taught us how to make some of the most exquisite life-imitation models from spare parchment.

The beauty of this class was that its lessons were easy! Thanks to my Spectrum Internet connection, I found this and some of the other art courses online. All of them were easy to learn and easy to execute.

Pretty soon, I was making both simple and intricate models of insects, plants and possibly every other animate thing I could think of.  Once the paper-turning & folding parts are complete, you can easily breathe life into your creations with a deck of cheap – though no less pretty – watercolors.

The Paper Craft You Need to Make TODAY– Shrubs!

Designing paper shrubs is a great way to involve the kids in a little round of home-based creativity. It’s also pretty cathartic. After you complete the odd-looking paper plant specimens, they turn out to be pretty endearing artworks.

DIY Shrubs

  • Things you’ll need
  •  Clean piece of paper (cut in 20 X 20cm size; green on one side, white on the other)
  •   A  pencil or pen (for providing temporary stem support)
  •  Fast-acting glue
  •  Sharp scissors or paper razor
  •  Gentleness (you can’t really do without it when handling paper…or life, for that matter)

Step 1: Lay the Groundwork

  1. Lay the paper on a flat surface, green side down.
  2. Fold it in half, and then retract.
  3. Rotate by ninety degrees, and carry out the same fold.
  4. Then turn again, and repeat with the remaining two sides.
  5. Your paper should have perpendicular creases.

Step 2: Commence with the Cutting

  1. Now you need to make incremental cuts (paper strips) from any one side.
  2. Start cutting along the crease line nearest to the edge, and only tear to the one-box line.
  3. Go down to the lower crease, and cut the sides of two boxes.
  4. Repeat process until you have parallel strips cut down in increasing length, with the longest stretched out at the bottom.

Step 3: Roll with a Pencil

Take the uncut side of the paper, and curl around the pencil.

To keep in place, use a little bit of gum.

Step 4: You Have Your Very Own Decorative Shrub

Once the glue sets, gently slide the supporting pencil outside of the formed paper loop.

In a peculiar way, your artwork should look like a many-fingered hand.

Make more models like this, and insert their loops with a long thread of yarn or a small wooden stick. And you’ll have your very own shrubbery extension to keep you company. You can hook the completed craft on to your wall, to give a contrasting forest-like ambiance to your sleeping quarters.

Some Parting Suggestions

One of the things I do when making artworks with paper is to smear the finished craft with some leftover scent. This turns your creations into complementary pieces of potpourri. That’s not all. It also leaves your room smelling fragrant at all times!

If you do end up carrying out this particular DIY project, consider using some fresh-cut grass scent. You can easily order it online through a number of common e-retailers.

If you want to know more about Origami, get Spectrum Triple Play plan. That was the best decision I made. Once you are all set, tune in to PBS’ onscreen production titled, The Origami Revolution. This program is great and therefore, should be your starting point.
