10 Great Ways to Save On Your Electric Bill
June 8, 2018Kids, car payments, saving for college, retirement fund, mortgage and so much more. There seems to be an undeniable link between age and expenses. The older we get the more and often times higher expenses we incur. However, more often than not, there are usually ways to continuously save on these expenses, especially household ones. Here are 10 easy ways to reduce your electrical usage and your monthly electric bill.
Way 1: Maintain Your Home’s Heating Equipment
Changing the filter in your furnace is an easy way to save money because heating equipment must work harder to circulate air through dirty filters. While you are changing the air filter, use a soft cloth or a small vacuum cleaner to remove the dust from the furnace’s components.
Way 2: Buy New Light Bulbs for Your Lighting Fixtures
If you are still using old-fashioned light bulbs, then buy new compact fluorescent light bulbs. While these types of light bulbs cost more, the items last longer and use less electricity.
Way 3: Turn Off Unneeded Electronics in Your Home
Walk through your home to see if you have electronic devices that you can unplug. Some of these devices such as alarm clocks or televisions use electricity all of the time. By turning off several electronic items, you can save money on your monthly utility bill.
Way 4: Clean Your Refrigerator’s Coils
Pull your refrigerator from the wall to clean the debris from the back of the appliance. You can also dust the refrigerator’s coils to remove debris. In addition, sweep the food crumbs and dirt from the floor underneath the appliance so that it can use less energy to constantly cool itself.
Way 5: Empty the Dirt from Your Vacuum Cleaner’s Collection Cup
If your vacuum cleaner’s collection cup is filled with debris, then you will need to vacuum longer to suction the dirt from your home’s floors and carpets. While you are emptying the collection cup, make sure to clean or change the vacuum cleaners filter.
Way 6: Remove the Sediments from Your Home’s Water Heater
When your electric water heater’s tank is filled with sediments, it will heat less water. Empty the water heater to remove the buildup of sediments in the tank.
Way 7: Open the Windows in the Summertime
Rather than using your home’s air conditioner in the summer, you can open the windows on cooler days. By opening the windows, you are going to have a reduced electric bill because air conditioners are expensive to constantly operate.
Way 8: Don’t Use Your Dishwasher
If you want to save money in your kitchen, then wash dishes the old-fashioned way by filling the sink with water and dish detergent. Washing your dishes several times a day in the dishwasher can add hundreds of dollars to your electric bill each year.
Way 9: Wash Full Loads of Laundry in a Washing Machine
Avoid washing a few items in your washing machine because it wastes electricity. Wait until you have a full load of laundry before using your washing machine. If you need to wash only one item, then wash it by hand in the sink.
Way 10: Hang Clothing to Dry Rather Than Using a Dryer
When you wash your garments and linens on a warm sunny day, take the items outside to hang on a clothesline. It is also possible to hang wet laundry inside your home by using a clothing or drying rack.
Keep Track of Your Electric Bills
Every home is different, some of these tactics may need to be adjusted depending on the house. To see how these changes save money, keep track of your electric bills each month and see what other changes may need to be made to ensure max savings.
